Tax Issue with Uyo L.G.Council

On Friday, 8th February, 2013 our vehicle was impounded by the operatives of the Uyo L.G. Council. Despite the information that non-profit organizations are not expected to pay “mobility tax” as demanded by the operatives of the Council, they maliciously refused to release the vehicle. The vehicle has been with them since then under terrible conditions. Due to this, we were not able to go on our weekly Food Distribution Outreach (FDO). About 40 mentally ill persons are usually served through this outreach and these were starved by the action of the Council. We are, therefore, contemplating legal action against the Council for obstructing our duty, unlawful fraudulent pressure on the Foundation, and exposing our vehicle to undue tear and wear under terrible environmental conditions. Above all, to seek the Court order on the Council to compensate the starved mentally ill persons who are legitimate beneficiaries of our FDO. Moreover, to campaign against the use of touts to collect revenues by the Council, and for transparency and accountability, which will lead to a responsible fiscal approach by the Council. This action is contemplated as a mean of promoting human rights and development.
